Edward Foster was born in London in 1961 and read Modern Languages and Law at Cambridge.
After some years in local and freelance journalism, he joined the Royal United Services Institute for Defence Studies (RUSI) in 1988 and subsequently became its head of European security studies. In the years that followed he closely monitored the transformation in the continent's geopolitics, its defence structures and doctrines, and the progressive involvement of Western governments and military in crisis management and outright warfighting in the Balkans, the Middle East and beyond.
He left RUSI in 2002, but continues to write and comment on defence and European politics. More recently he has been working on the first in-depth study in English of Napoleon's defence of Paris in 1814.
